Online Job Search Skills

11/30/2015
With a vast number of job opportunities available, reduced intermediary costs, and minimized travel time, online job searching is increasingly recognized by recruitment experts as a more efficient alternative to traditional job-seeking methods. Many predict that this approach will gradually replace conventional job search practices.

Creating a competitive edge
According to Mr. Le Dai Duong from Timviecnhanh.com, "Online job searching offers numerous advantages, as job seekers can access relevant recruitment information with just a click or by entering a few keywords. Additionally, the number of job listings is vast, as more employers opt to post job advertisements online, with tens of thousands of new job opportunities updated daily—even hourly or by the minute.

Based on these advantages, Mr. Dương argues that online job searching is significantly more effective and will eventually replace traditional job-seeking methods, such as visiting employment centers or relying on personal connections for job referrals. However, to maximize the effectiveness of online job searches, individuals must develop essential skills, including information filtering, strategic job searching, and resume preparation.

Online job searching is more effective than traditional methods

Mr. Duong advises job seekers to compile a list of reputable job search websites and regularly update their information to seize new opportunities. Additionally, applicants should carefully select trustworthy employers and submit applications that align closely with their field of expertise to increase their chances of securing a position. According to Mr. Dao Minh Tan, CEO of CareerVision.vn, candidates should pay attention to several key factors when preparing an online application. First and foremost, they must provide complete and clear personal and contact information to ensure that potential employers can reach them promptly. Additionally, incorporating job- and industry-related keywords in their applications will enhance visibility in search engine results, increasing their chances of being noticed by recruiters.

To secure a suitable job online in the shortest time possible, Mr. Bui Ngoc Quoc Hung, CEO of CareerBuilder, emphasizes the importance of preparing an English-language resume. He notes that this is a critical factor, as it allows employers from any country to review an applicant’s credentials. In Vietnam, the number of English-language resumes is nearly double that of Vietnamese ones. Furthermore, Mr. Hung highlights that a standout resume—one that sets itself apart—will always catch the employer’s attention.
Losing points due to resume mistakes
With years of experience in recruitment, Mr. Quoc Hung has observed that many applicants make critical mistakes when preparing their resumes. “Some resumes exceed five pages but are merely a list of personal experiences, skills, and education, without effectively highlighting the candidate’s relevant experience in relation to the employer’s needs,” he explained.
Mr. Hung further emphasized that a candidate’s professionalism can be assessed through multiple factors, with language use being a primary one. Many applicants fail to maintain linguistic consistency in their resumes, sometimes mixing Vietnamese and English within the same document. Common errors include spelling and grammatical mistakes, which recruiters frequently encounter during the screening process. “It is essential to proofread your resume carefully before submitting it,” Mr. Hung advised. “Otherwise, these avoidable mistakes could undermine your chances and leave a negative impression on potential employers.”

Mr. Dao Minh Tan emphasized, “One of the key principles when submitting an online job application is maintaining active communication with the employer. However, many applicants overlook this crucial step, often submitting their applications and passively waiting for a response. Following up with an email or phone call not only confirms that the employer has received your application but also serves as a strategic way to reaffirm your strong interest in the position.” Mr. Tan further highlighted that while salary is a sensitive topic, it remains a significant concern for job seekers. However, demanding an excessively high salary in one’s application—especially in relation to the role and one’s qualifications—may not be advisable. He explained, “It is important to maintain a realistic perspective on compensation, taking into account your skills and the value you can contribute to the company. Otherwise, your application may be overlooked by recruiters.”

Mr. Dai Duong advised job seekers to thoroughly research a company before applying. A reputable company should have a well-established website, a registered tax identification number, and a clearly defined office location. In particular, applicants should be wary of job offers that promise exceptionally high salaries despite requiring little experience or skills, as well as positions that demand an upfront deposit before employment, have unusually late working hours, or lack a clearly specified workplace.
