UEFers discover the unique Lunar New Year of the Land of Kimchi

DECEMBER 30, the Korean Language Department - Faculty of Languages and International Cultures successfully organized the themed workshop of “Stories of Korean Lunar New year”, as part of the series of “Cultural treasure” activities under the Faculty. The workshop aimed to enhance UEFers understanding and interest in Korean culture, alongside creating opportunities for exchange and study between UEFers and experts.

The workshop was joined by Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Linh - Deputy Director of Faculty of Languages and International Cultures, Ms. Bui Thi My Linh - Head of Korean Language Department, together with lecturers under the department.

On behalf of Sejong 3 Academy HCMC included: Mr. Bak Ji Hyeon - Operations specialist, the main speaker of the workshop; Mrs. Tran Huong Linh - Operations employee and Mr. Do Tran Tien - Administrative staff.

During the opening minutes, Mr. Bak Ji Hyeon gave an overview of the origin and special meaning of Korean Lunar New Year, or “Seollal”, with traditional practices and ceremonies that embodied the folklore culture. The speaker also highlighted the notable activities of Koreans during Seollal, from wearing Hanbok for giving New Year wishes, to signature dishes like rice cake soup and pancakes, and finally folk games often played by Koreans during Lunar New Year such as “Yutnori”.

In addition, the expert also compared the similarities and differences between Lunar New Year of both nations, assist UEFers with better understanding about the distinct features of both cultures.

Following the theories, UEFers together participated in real-world activities. They had the opportunity to directly experience the folk games, engaged in the atmosphere of Seollal through dynamic activities such as decorating the Korean flag, together playing “Yutnori”, and creating a lively Lunar New Year atmosphere at UEF.

The Korean Lunar New Year workshop ended in a lively and warm atmosphere. It is hoped that these dynamic experiences would fuel their interest and deepen their understanding of Korean culture, while paving the way for numerous future meeting and study opportunities.
