Vietnamese rap harmonize with traditional melodies at the “Tre Truyen Tre” Event

FEBRUARY 25, the “Tre Truyen Tre” workshop, a unique event from the students of Multimedia Communications Management at FPT University HCMC in cooperation with the UEF Center of  Service-Learning was successfully held. 

The workshop is a dynamic experiential space, where the youth can explore and answer the question:” Can youth harmonize with the traditional cultural essence using personal language and style?”. With the unique fusion between traditional music and modern rap music, the workshop attracted the interest of numerous students and the young music enthusiasts.

The talk show session witnessed the participation of: Dr. Nguyen Thi Quoc Minh - Lecturer of the Faculty of Literature at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University HCMC; Ms. Pham Thi Kim Long - Traditional music lecturer of FPT University HCMC; Rtee - Rapper; Ho - Producer. 

On behalf of UEF and FPTU in participating in the workshop were: Ms. Tran Thi My Phuong - Director of UEF Center of Service-Learning, Ms. Huynh Kim Phung - Coordinator of UEF Center of Service-Learning, Mr. Nguyen Le Cao Binh - Lecturer of Multimedia Communication at FPT University HCMC, Ms. Ta Ngoc Linh - Lecturer of Multimedia Communication at FPT University HCMC.

At the workshop, the speakers shared the interconnection between folk culture and rap music. Mr. Nguyen Thi Quoc Minh emphasized that the youth these days never forget the traditional culture values, instead, they always try to find ways to adapt and innovate those values.  

Ms. Pham Thi Kim Long simultaneously presented  on how to incorporate traditional music instruments into contemporary music products, contributing to a sense of closeness, optimism, and freshness for listeners. According to her, music is more than a tool for entertainment but also a means of conveying profound spiritual values. 

Rtee and Ho also shared their musical creativity experiences, providing the youth a better understanding on how to incorporate both traditional and modern elements in music. Rtee mentioned that there are always the presence of traditional sounds in his music, as they are an indispensable part of Vietnamese culture.

The highlight of the event being the performances by rapper Rtee together with Producer Ho. Both artists directly introduced the beat production process and the creation of rap music combined with the traditional instrument of Zither, performed by Ms. Kim Long. An extraordinary melody was created while still maintaining the distinctive features of traditional music.

After the music production, Rtee and Ho held an interesting challenge: rapping with the audiences. The young participants engaged in this challenge had the opportunity to showcase their rap composition talent and sync with the rab beat produced by Ho. This dynamic experience helped the young participants confidently express themselves while also sparking the creativity in blending tradition and modernity.

The “Tre Truyen Tre” event concluded with overflowing emotions and further knowledge of modern music when being integrated with folk influences . By their unique language and personal style, the young generation have proven that they will inherit and revive the traditional values creatively and attractively.
