IRers learn about the East Sea issue during the Covid period

04/05/2022

Following the previous knowledge-sharing activities in areas such as international journalism and diplomatic reception, the Faculty of International Relations of UEF continued to organize a talkshow with the theme “South China Sea issues during the Covid-19 pandemic: New developments” on August 18.

Activities attended by Dr. Dao Minh Hong - Vice Dean of the Faculty of International Relations and the faculty members of the Faculty. The main speaker is Mr. Pham Ngoc Minh Trang – Researcher, Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law, Federal Republic of Germany. At the same time, she is a lecturer at the Department of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City.

During the talk, UEFers was pointed out by Ms. Minh Trang, analyzed new issues of the East Sea situation and shared experiences and the way to become a researcher on current international issues.

Accordingly, the situation in the East Sea can be viewed from two perspectives. One is, on the ground. This is a small but very "hot" sea area because major powers have gradually sent warships into this area, such as the US, France, UK, Germany, etc with the aim of opposing China.

Second, on the international forum. As a rule, when a country wants to expand its sea area beyond 200 nautical miles, it needs to go through a specialized agency of the United Nations. If such an extension, there is an overlap with another country will not be considered, unless the parties involved come to a compromise and consensus.

Besides, according to Mr. Pham Ngoc Minh Trang, a number of countries have also begun to participate in the "war of notes". First of all, the US should be mentioned, then Japan, UK, France, Germany, and Australia respectively. Notably, the country has never participated in the "South China Sea affair" - Brunei has also started sending a note, along with New Zealand also getting involved for the first time a week ago.

All countries have sent notes aimed at protesting China's claims in the South China Sea. This means opposing the issue of freedom of countries in this region.

Vietnam is one of the countries heavily affected by the Covid-19 epidemic that broke out from China. What will the situation be like when the East Asian country promotes the issue of the East Sea? is the question posed.

Accordingly, Ms. Trang said, on the East Sea issue, our country applies the policy of 3 no, 1 depends. Depending on the situation, Vietnam will have appropriate improvisational ways to protect its sovereignty over sea and islands.

In the second part of the talkshow, IRers heard the speaker share his journey of trying to get to the position he is in now. The guest also sent a message to those of you who still find themselves lost with the question "What to do after graduating from school?" the know-how she has accumulated to position herself.

Accordingly, you should sum up all the things you cannot do to infer what you will be able to do. Just follow and be passionate about the work that makes you feel comfortable. There is no need to make plans that are too grand, clear, but go step by step and apply the rule of the rolling stone – When the stone begins to roll, many things will follow.

It is important to determine what you are good at and how to push your stone to roll. Try to seize the opportunity to turn up, but before that, there must be preparations. Youth should work hard because there is no shortcut to glory.

With arguments, sharp views and clear problem analysis, MSc. Pham Ngoc Minh Trang gave IRers an overview and updated more knowledge about the situation in the East Sea during Covid. At the same time, students also learn more valuable experiences from their predecessors to be successful in their chosen industry or profession.
