Training Workshop: "U.S and China: Discord and Rivalry in the South China Sea"

In order to provide suitable information and knowledge for students who participate in the Academic Festival “Ho Chi Minh City’s Youth and the South China Sea”, the Faculty of International Relations in collaboration with the Foundation for East Sea Studies (FESS), and under the sponsorship of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in Vietnam organized a Training Workshop with the theme “U.S and China: Discord and Rivalry in the South China Sea”. The workship took place at 13h30 on 23.11.2020, Room 8:07, Ho Chi Minh city University of Economic –Finance. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Trung - Director of the Saigon Center for International Studies (SCIS), University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Ho Chi Minh – is the guest speaker.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Trung first outlined the South China Sea’s geographical features, and then summarized the main activities of the US and China in this important geopolitical hotspot. He also claimed that the South China Sea is the place where power competition between the US and China has rapidly evolving, creating many challenges for neighboring countries, including Vietnam. However, there are also opportunities that Vietnam should know how to take advantage of in order to get benefits and protect its national interests.

The workshop revolved around three main points: territorial disputes in the South China Sea, the actual militarization situation in the South China Sea, and Vietnam's position in the process of resolving disputes in the South China Sea.

The workshop attracted the participation of many students from the Faculty of International Relations, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance; the Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University - HCM; the Department of International Studies, Ho Chi Minh City Pedagogical University; and the Department of International Relations, Hong Bang International University.

The workshop "U.S and China: Discord and Rivalry in the South China Sea” presented by Dr. Nguyen Thanh Trung belongs to the Training Workshop series for participants of the Academic Festival "Ho Chi Minh City’s Youth and the South China Sea" organized by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance in collaboration with the Foundation for East Sea Studies (FESS) under the sponsorship of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in Vietnam.

The Grand Finale of the Academic Festival "Ho Chi Minh City’s Youth and the South China Sea" took place on November 26, 2020, at the Democracy Meeting Room, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance.
