DECEMBER 20, the UEF International Institute welcomed the University of Arkansas (USA) to participate in a special workshop titled FTHM.TALK: Gourmet Journeys: Coffee, Chocolate, Cuisine & Culture, organized by the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management. By participating in the workshop, students of both universities explored the connection between beverages and different cultures. They also experienced the brewing process of and sampled the distinctive flavors of coffee and chocolate.
UEF welcomed international students for cultural exchange and coffee exploration
At the workshop, students had the opportunity to listen to shared insights from Prof.Dr. Eric Jose Olmedo Panal - Director of the UEF International Institute, Dean of Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Ms. Thao Quynh - Founder & Owner of the Lala Coffee & Tea chain. On behalf of UEF and the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management were Dr. Do Nguyen Huu Loc - Vice President, Ms. Nguyen Viet Thuy - Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Chi - Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality Management, and Ms. Tran Thị Bich Duyen - Lecturer. The event also welcomed partners, including Mr. Kevin Thacker - Consultant của M&K Tourism and Culture Exchange with Ms. Thanh Tram - Barista Expert of the University of Arkansas.

International Students Enthralled by the Theme of FTHM.TALK
The program began with a lecture on the history and origins of coffee, one of the world’s most cherished beverages. Students were introduced to the idea that coffee originated in Ethiopia and the legend of Kaldi. Ms. Thao Quynh provided an overview of the two most popular types of coffee, Arabica and Robusta, while explaining the harvesting process, emphasizing the techniques required to meet quality standards.
In addition, participants also delved into the growth of the coffee industry, starting from the 17th century when coffee trade began expanding. The speakers discussed changes in the coffee market today and its cultural significance. Prof. Eric Olmedo elaborated on the unique characteristics of Viennese coffee and provided a detailed overview of the historical trade routes that shaped the coffee industry over the centuries.

Expertises shared stories of coffee and chocolate respectively
One of the fascinating topics discussed during the program was the health benefits of coffee. The speakers pointed out that moderate coffee consumption could lower the risk of certain diseases and even extend lifespan. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, was also highlighted for its rich antioxidants and cardiovascular health benefits.

Interactive practice session with professional Barista
Beyond the theory, students practiced and experienced the brewing skills in practice at the workshop as well. Ms. Thanh Tram, a professional barista, demonstrated how to prepare various types of coffee, from Espresso to traditional Vietnamese drip coffee. Students also learned how to make hot chocolate and create appealing drinks from coffee beans.

Souvenirs Presented to U.S. Students
This special program offered the opportunity for students to explore unique cultural values through culinary exploration. Additionally, FTHM.TALK created an opportunity for students to engage with international cultures, expand their learning horizons, and develop essential skills for careers in tourism, hospitality, and restaurant management.
It is believed that by participating in this workshop, students gained not only valuable knowledge about coffee and chocolate but also lasting memories of their journey to learn about and experience international culinary cultures.
